A few days ago, I was contacted by a reporter from the Seattle Times who wanted to interview me. I explained that I don’t do interviews with corrupt media, especially newspapers that endorsed George W. Bush and lied about me TWICE during my last bid for public office (e.g. the Seattle Times). She e-mailed be back, saying she’d check out my website and requesting some biographical information...“I need your age, occupation, family info (married, kids, etc), political background and top three endorsements.”

Could someone give these idiots a clue? I’m probably three or four years older than I was the last time I ran for office. (Don’t these people keep files on political candidates?) Moreover, candidates are required to list their age and occupation when they file their paperwork.

And what’s this BS about top three endorsements? She knew damn well real activists don’t get ANY endorsements in this town.

Whatever.

At any rate, I worked for the Seattle School District as a substitute for five years, followed by about eleven more years as a permanent employee until I was laid off at the end of the 2001-2002 school year after the school board lost (or embezzled) over $30 million. Almost all of my time was spent in elementary schools, including Lowell, Loyal Heights, Highland Park “POW Camp,” Dearborn Park, Olympic Hills, Katherine Blaine, Rainier View (Seattle’s premier ghetto school) and Van Asselt.

I experienced an extraordinary amount of tyranny and incompetence from day one but was especially radicalized by Highland Park, though I loved the kids there. I became a whistle-blower and activist about the time the Seattle Chamber of Commerce recruited the derelict retired general John Stanford to spearhead the privatization of Seattle’s public schools. I went on to run for public office four times, twice for Seattle School Board and twice for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Since I’m so politically active, I decided to create an online biography. In fact, I decided to create two of them, one associated with my general audience sites (www.david-blomstrom.org) and the other associated with my political sites (www.davidblomstrom.org). Unfortunately, I haven’t finished the second site. However, you can learn a little about my background at the first site, especially on the Political Activism page.

I might seem a study in contrasts; on the one hand, I’m more outspoken and forthright than almost anyone else in Seattle. In contrast to most public officials and “activists,” I actually have a track record. Yet, at the same time, I snub media endorsement interviews, seldom attend forums and don’t always respond to e-mails and phone calls. What gives?

Well, I discovered that the Seattle media are just as corrupt as the national media during my first election campaign. It makes no sense to call the media corrupt, then jump at an opportunity to seek their endorsement. I similarly discovered that Seattle political forums are generally shams...and those are the ones that I get invited to.

As usual, there have been many forums that I was never even told about, along with a few others I snubbed. There’s simply no point in attending an event attended almost exclusively by members of the Seattle Mafia where I’m allowed a total of less than five minutes to introduce myself and answer one or two predictably stupid questions.

As for e-mail and phone calls, well, most of the communications I receive are—you guessed it—a joke. Occasionally, I get an anonymous e-mail asking if I’m interested in some scandal or derelict principal. I always reply “Yes,” to no avail. I seldom get any further intelligence or even a response to my response.

I’m contemplating hosting my own forum, probably some time in late October. However, I’d have to find a place to hold it, and I’m really not interested if it will only be attended by three or four people.

Finally, would I be this aloof if I was elected to the school board? Of course not. I’m already more “out there” than any school board member I’ve ever known of. For starters, I would be the only school board member with a permanent political website, not just a political website.

In summary, I’m always eager to communicate with people who are truly interested in learning the truth about their schools, especially if they’re also willing to help fix them. Unfortunately, such individuals are rare in Seattle.
